Did you know it takes a weaver an entire year to weave just one square meter of a tapestry? And that Denmark’s 16 new royal tapestries together span a total of 108 square meters?
On top of that, there are only a few places in the world that still master this old craft — like the Manufacture des Gobelins in Paris, as well as the workshops in Beauvais and Aubusson. We were given the rare opportunity to film at all three of these beautiful, historic weaving studios in France, where the craft has remained unchanged for 400 years.
We were also invited into the studios of the four Danish artists behind the tapestries: Kirstine Roepstorff, Bjørn Nørgaard, Tal R, and Alexander Tovborg. We explored their artistic visions and what it means to work within this unique format.
One film follows the four Danish artists and the intention behind the entire ‘New Royal Tapestries’ project. Another dives into the venerable French weaving workshops. And then there’s an introductory film and a trailer..
